Green Walls Transitional Living Room Design

Project Description:

We are redoing our family room. We just redid the hardwoods and painted. We plan on refacing the fireplace and add cabinets on each side. The furniture will need to be replaced. It is our only living area so it's also our TV room. Our hope is for a room that when people come in, they immediately feel comfortable — but also feel a bit of a 'wow'. We have a dog and cat. Right now my husband and I live here with our 18 year old who is stuck attending college from home due to Covid and my 23 year old daughter and her boyfriend who are waiting to get their first apartment next fall. We're about to be empty nesters. Although we don't have small children, we don't want to be 'delicate' in this room; it's just not us. We want to sit back, watch TV, put our feet up, and snuggle with the pets. We live in Syracuse, NY so the fireplace is used many months of the year. We struggle with storage of books and have no place for alcohol/wine glasses. We don't drink much casually but want to have easy ways to offer drinks when company comes over, either in the kitchen or the living room.

We are hoping to slide a little more towards modern, clean lines but not all the way so transitional might be a good description. I will tip a bit towards more modern and predict my husband will be closer to transitional. We are not far off from each other though so it shouldn't be hard to please us both.

After this, we will look to do a medium update of our kitchen/dining room followed by our bedroom.

The fireplace facing/surround. My husband ripped out the previous cabinetry. We just finished the hardwoods last month and they look great. The color of the walls were selected by a designer who did all the wall colors in the home so they coordinated. We like them and worry that changing this room would create a domino effect throughout the home and would rather not — but we are open to hearing an argument for change. The furniture is getting tired and will need replacing. We have no room for books in our house so they create clutter. We have some pet stuff that makes the room look cluttered. We don't have anywhere to put items for a bar. We don't drink often but want a place to put bar items/wine bottles so we have access when people come over. That could go in the kitchen/dining redo that comes next. When all five of us are in the living room, there's not enough seating with a place to put up your feet.

Since your room is large your color options with this room are quite broad

For your main color, we chose to use green because it is soothing to the eye. It reminds us of nature and has a refreshing, stress relieving quality. Green is suitable for any room. In bedrooms it’s relaxing and pleasing, while in dining rooms it promotes overall balance and health. This soothing color encourages relaxation or tranquility, but has enough warmth to encourage comfort and harmony.

Use a matte finish paint because it will be helpful in camouflaging those surface imperfections such as bumps and cracks as it does not reflect light. Just be careful because matte finish is more difficult to clean. You may also need to touch up scratches or marks by adding more of the same paint in the future.
