Did interior design always interest you?
As a young girl, I tried to cover my wallpaper with Velcro tape to stick all my toys to it and have them all on display. So, yes! The curiosity for design was always there, but I didn’t come to design that easily. My first degree is in Civil Law. Only a long time after getting it, I realized how important it was for me to express my design vision.
So I decided to make a significant change in my life. I enrolled in a new field and received my degree in Interior Architecture. And I have been practicing interior design, object design, and color consulting ever since!
How would you define your design style?
Modern, vintage, and eclectic design captures it. However, usually, with clients, I don’t even mention the design style because it can be pretty misleading. In most cases, Pinterest defines a style incorrectly, and that’s where clients look for inspiration. But to sum up, my design style is all about light, proportions, and natural materials.
Who or what influences your work?
I follow the work of prolific designers like Jean-Louis Deniot, Vincent Darre, David Hicks, Dorothy Draper, and Madeleine Castaing. Going to flea markets also inspires me. I enjoy mixing elements from different periods and intersecting art, contemporary design, and craftsmanship.
Of course, the most influential aspect of my work is the people I work with. Clients who respect and value my work are the biggest source of inspiration!
What’s a must-have item you make sure your interior designs include?
In every residential project, I try to reflect the interest, hobbies, and personality of the owner in the interior. The design feels like home only when it reflects your inner state. So by asking multiple questions and setting a thorough brief, I can find the main items that would serve as the base for the design. In doing so, I can reflect the owner’s personality.
What is a recent design trend that you love at the moment?
Color blocking, a trend coming from early 20th-century fashion, has been around for the last couple of years and seems like it’s not going anywhere! If you think about it, paint is the cheapest tool to transform an interior. Metamorphosis comes instantly with a new color.
A bucket of paint and a day of work can change the space dramatically! That’s why it’s so important to find a colorist who knows the rules of color and can suggest the perfect palette for your home.
If you had to pick a favorite room in your home, which would it be and why?
Oh, we are right in the middle of moving to our new house, but I can already guess which will be my favorite. I believe it’s going to be the terrace with a view of the mountains!
What is your favorite design magazine or blog and why?
Recently, I have been following a lot of Russian interior designers. These include Elena Gorenshtein, Maria Kunyakina, Svetlana Dikushina, and Dasha Soboleva. Although European and American trends heavily influence their work, the designers keep a very particular Russian aesthetic that fascinates me.
What is the best thing about being an interior designer?
The best part about being an interior designer is that you can use almost anything you do or see as inspiration for a design. Exhibitions, movies, paintings, architecture, and simple walks can inspire the next project.
Of course, a sense of humor is also so important in this life! So, incorporating fun pieces and taking a lighthearted approach is always appreciated by clients.
What was your first big project and what was your favorite part?
My first practice was in Beijing, China. I went for a short-term project to help design the Children Library. Significantly, China is investing the best resources in the education of its youth. So, I felt honored to be a part of such a creative international team.
My favorite part was the speed of production. While in Europe and the US you wait for months for any custom pieces, in China some items were manufactured overnight!
How do you manage challenges that come up during a design project?
Questions. I ask many detailed questions to find the optimal solution for every challenge in the shortest time possible.
Why do you like being an online interior designer?
Online interior design connects me to other interior designers and clients globally, who I might never have met otherwise. For clients, it’s also a more affordable way to receive a high-quality design within their timeframe.
Marketing and exposure is everything in our business. And Decorilla promotes its interior designers within the company – it’s something I value a lot!
