Adding a child to your family brings with it the fun of designing the space that they’ll occupy. Baby girl room design is light-hearted and whimsical, encouraging imagination and play, no matter the style. This couple wanted a functional and sophisticated nursery design that could easily grow with their second child. Turning their plain guest room into a feminine nursery, while also incorporating gray accessories from their older son’s nursery, presented a playful challenge. Nevertheless, the Decorilla team was up for the task. Read on to see her lux baby nursery design and how the room was transformed.
THE CHALLENGE
- Transform a guest room into a nursery.
- Create a design that grows with the client’s child as she gets older.
- Create space for play, and plenty of storage.
- Incorporate gray colors from older child’s nursery so that they can reuse accessories.
THE INSPIRATION
This design is inspired by transitional and contemporary design, as well as gray accents that can be found throughout the clients’ home. Keeping the palette neutral with elegant accents makes the design timeless. Thus, when the time comes to transition the space from an infant, to toddler, to big kid room, it will be a little more effortless.
THE DESIGN
With some freedom to recommend the best transitional nursery decor ideas, Decorilla designer Laura A. built a design around two simple requirement: implementing the color gray, and not making it very infantile. On the contrary, Laura incorporated art that contrasted the typical over-the-top baby themes, and she also brought in more gray-toned accessories to go with the accessories that the clients already owned.
THE INITIAL MOODBOARD
The soft and subtle color palette stole the client’s heart when they saw Laura’s moodboard. The white furniture and wall paint keeps the space bright and airy while the grey accents and luxurious textures bring interest into the room. With a few minor tweaks it was time to move onto the next step in the process and make this nursery design come to life.
THE RESULT
Staying in line with the gray accessories that the clients already owned, the designer sourced coordinating gray furniture and accents. To begin with, the gray curtains help block the intense evening light, while also creating a variety in color for the bedroom. Similarly, a two-toned gray rug provides depth to the design of the room, while remaining neutral overall. We introduced a few other gray accessories throughout the room, given that the gray tones make for excellent accents. This includes a basket, a pouf, and a side table.
Next, we layered in feminine accents by incorporating pastel pink accessories. Second, each painting includes soft pink brush strokes that form flowers in bloom or dainty abstract collages. Finally, we added a second pouf in pink near the pink glider chair in the lux baby nursery design.
Creating ample storage is one of the the baby bedroom ideas that must be remembered. So that the room could be easily organized, whether presently for a newborn, or for an adolescent in the future, we placed neutral white multipurpose drawers and shelving along the far wall. The central unit serves as a changing table now, but could later house an entertainment center, or more storage. Likewise, the shelves on either side of the central unit create space for housing books and baskets that can store smaller items. A mirrored armoire makes more space for clothes than is currently available in the room’s small closet.
Altogether, the elements combine to give the clients the feminine contemporary nursery that they requested. The uncomplicated design is graceful and charming, with attention to small details that can be long-lasting for a child’s room.
