Michael J.
Michael is an esteemed interior designer with over a decade of extensive experience in the furnishing, fashion, and design industries. He holds the conviction that elegance in design stems from the ability to remain flexible and adaptable. Guided by the philosophy that nothing in life is truly "set in stone," Michael approaches each project with a keen understanding that individual needs and preferences evolve. His commitment to this dynamic, ever-changing process ensures that the environments he crafts are not only sophisticated and timeless but also uniquely tailored to reflect the continuous growth and change of those inhabiting them.
Describe your go-to style:
My go-to style is definitely more transitional-modern but I am also drawn to the light and airy coastal modern aesthetic as well. Ultimately, I like to feel malleable in terms of my style, as I think the same design principles can be applied to any client's unique and personal design aesthetic. I also think that architecture and geography play a huge role in influencing the types of materials and furnishings that should be used in any given space. Therefore, I may feel an element is completely right for one project, but not at all for another.
What drives you to design?
I am driven to design people's homes because it challenges me and I have always felt compelled to try to make a difference in this world. Interior design is really the only way I know how to do that. I would also say that what I truly love about the discipline is that it combines my creative talents with my more mechanical and mathematical talents and having a job that can engage both sides of my brain is very rewarding. There is also nothing more satisfying than working on a project with an individual or a family, and seeing how happy it makes them to come home and have some inner peace and relaxation. I think we are all "home doctors" in a way, and I think people understand now, especially after the pandemic, that keeping one's sanctuary in order is really key to one's overall health.
Describe your ideal project:
My ideal project is one where my client's are fully engaged in the design process. I think a lot of us want a more "hands-off" approach when it comes to our clients because it does make facilitating the project easier to a certain extent, but I love feedback. I find when a client is involved and passionate, we are able to achieve a greater result together. One of my top clients that I have been working with for a very long time on multiple properties, is very involved and actually sometimes jumps ahead of me in the design process; I think this could potentially disrupt some designers' process, but together ultimately we have built beautiful homes and I feel she helps me grow as a designer throughout the course of the project which I can respect and appreciate.
